In October 1989, 43 women from different countries around the world give birth to children, even without being pregnant. Some of the infants are endowed with extraordinary abilities, such as superhuman strength, endurance, levitation, and the ability to manipulate consciousness. Billionaire Sir Reginald Hargreeves (Colm Feore) finds and adopts as many of these children as he can, and raises a team of superheroes in the academy he founded called "The Umbrella Academy". The strange family occasionally saves the world, but they do not have warm feelings towards their adoptive father. After Hargreeves' mysterious death, the scattered students reunite in the walls of the academy, which are now no longer children but psychologically unstable adults, traumatized by their specific parent and his methods of upbringing. They must overcome alienation and mistrust as soon as possible in order to save the world, which is expected to end in eight days...
